It Takes Real Courage to Desert Your Post and Then Attack a Wounded Vet

Dear Mr. Bush,

I know you and I have had our differences in the past, and I realize I am the one who started this whole mess about "who did what" during Vietnam when I brought up that "deserter" nonsense back in January. But I have to hand it to you on what you have uncovered about John Kerry and his record in Vietnam. Kerry has tried to pass himself off as a war hero, but thanks to you and your friends, we now know the truth.

First of all, thank you for pointing out to all of us that Mr. Kerry was never struck by a BULLET. It was only SHRAPNEL that entered his body! I did not know that! Hell, what's the big deal about a bunch of large, sharp, metal shards ripping open your flesh? That happens to all of us! In my opinion, if you want a purple heart, you'd better be hit with a bullet -- with your name on it!

Secondly, thank you for sending Bob Dole out there and letting us know that Mr. Kerry, though wounded three times, actually "never spilled blood." When you are in the debates with Kerry, turn to him and say, "Dammit, Mr. Kerry, next time you want a purple heart, you better spill some American red blood! And I don't mean a few specks like those on O.J.'s socks -- we want to see a good pint or two of blood for each medal. In fact, I would have preferred that you had bled profusely, a big geyser of blood spewing out of your neck or something!" Then throw this one at him: "Senator Kerry, over 58,000 brave Americans gave their lives in Vietnam -- but YOU didn't. You only got WOUNDED! What do you have to say for yourself???" Lay that one on him and he won't know what to do.

And thanks, also, Mr. Bush, for exposing the fact that Mr. Kerry might have actually WOUNDED HIMSELF in order to get those shiny medals. Of course he did! How could the Viet Cong have hit him -- he was on a SWIFT boat! He was going too fast to be hit by enemy fire. He tried to blow himself up three different times just so he could go home and run for president someday. It's all so easy to see, now, what he was up to.

What would we do without you, Mr. Bush? Criticize you as we might, when it comes to pointing out other men's military records, there is no one who can touch your prowess. In 2000, you let out the rumor that your opponent John McCain might be "nuts" from the 5 years he spent in a POW camp. Then, in the 2002 elections, your team compared triple-amputee Sen. Max Cleland to Osama bin Laden, and that cost him the election. And now you are having the same impact on war hero John Kerry. Since you (oops, I mean "The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth!") started running those ads, Kerry's polls numbers have dropped (with veterans, he has lost 18 points in the last few weeks).

Some people have said "Who are you, Mr. Bush, to attack these brave men considering you yourself have never seen combat -- in fact, you actively sought to avoid it." What your critics fail to understand is that even though your dad got you into a unit that would never be sent to Vietnam -- and even though you didn't show up for Guard duty for at least a year -- at least you were still IN FAVOR of the Vietnam War! Cowards like Clinton felt it was more important to be consistent (he opposed the war, thus he refused to go) than to be patriotic and two-faced.

The reason that I think you know so much about other men's war wounds is because, during your time you in the Texas Air National Guard, you suffered so many of them yourself. Consider the paper cut you received on September 22, 1972, while stationed in Alabama, working on a Senate campaign for your dad's friend (when you were supposed to be on the Guard base). A campaign brochure appeared from nowhere, ambushing your right index finger, and blood trickled out onto your brand new argyle sweater.

Then there was the incident with the Crazy Glue when your fraternity brothers visited you one weekend at the base and glued your lips together while you were "passed out." Though initially considered "friendly fire," it was later ruled that you suffered severe post traumatic stress disorder from the assault and required certain medicinal attention -- which, it seems, was provided by those same fraternity brethren.

But nothing matched your heroism when, on July 2, 1969, you sustained a massive head injury when enemy combatants from another Guard unit dropped a keg of Coors on your head during a reconnaissance mission at a nearby all-girls college. Fortunately, the cool, smooth fluids that poured out of the keg were exactly what was needed to revive you.

That you never got a purple heart for any of these incidents is a shame. I can fully appreciate your anger at Senator Kerry for the three he received. I mean, Kerry was a man of privilege, he could have gotten out just like you. Instead, he thinks he's going to gain points with the American people bragging about how he was getting shot at every day in the Mekong Delta. Ha! Is that the best he can do? Hell, I hear gunfire every night outside my apartment window! If he thinks he is going to impress anyone with the fact that he volunteered to go when he could have spent the Vietnam years on the family yacht, he should think again. That only shows how stupid he was! True-blue Americans want a president who knows how to pull strings and work the system and get away with doing as little work as possible!

So, to make it up to you, I have written some new ads you can use on TV. People will soon tire of the swift boat veterans and you are going to need some fresh, punchier material. Feel free to use any of these:

ANNOUNCER: "When the bullets were flying all around him in Vietnam, what did John Kerry do? He said he leaned over the boat and 'pulled a man out of the river.' But, as we all know, men don't live in the river -- fish do. John Kerry knows how to tell a big fish tale. What he won't tell you is that when the enemy was shooting at him, he ducked. Do you want a president who will duck? Vote Bush."

ANNOUNCER: "Mr. Kerry's biggest supporter, Sen. Max Cleland, claims to have lost two legs and an arm in Vietnam. But he still has one arm! How did that happen? One word: Cowardice. When duty called, he was unwilling to give his last limb. Is that the type of selfishness you want hanging out in the White House? We think not. Vote for the man who would be willing to give America his right frontal lobe. Vote Bush."

Hope these help, Mr. Bush. And remember, when the American death toll in Iraq hits 1,000 during the Republican convention, be sure to question whether those who died really did indeed "die" -- or were they just trying to get their face on CNN's nightly tribute to fallen heroes? The sixteen who've died so far this week were probably working hand in hand with the Kerry campaign to ruin your good time in New York. Stay consistent, sir, and always, ALWAYS question the veracity of anyone who risks their life for this country. It's the least they deserve.

Yours,

Michael Moore
mmflint@aol.com
www.michaelmoore.com

PS. George, I know you said you don't read the newspaper, but USA Today has given me credentials to the Republican convention to write a guest column each day next week (Tues.-Fri.). If you don't want to read it, you and I will be in the same building so maybe I could come by and read it to you? Lemme know...

Aug. 16, 2004 | LOS ANGELES (AP) -- President Bush will face a home-video barrage four weeks before the election: "Fahrenheit 9/11," Michael Moore's assault on Bush's handling of the Sept. 11 attacks, debuts on DVD and videotape Oct. 5.

The announcement Tuesday confirmed Moore's initial intention to have the film out shortly before Election Day, a time frame the director favored since May's Cannes Film Festival, where "Fahrenheit 9/11" won the top honor.

After the movie debuted to record box-office numbers for a documentary, distributor Lions Gate had indicated the movie might continue playing theatrically through the end of the year, potentially delaying the home-video release.

The film has grossed $115 million domestically, the first documentary ever to top the $100 million mark.

Sony's Columbia TriStar home entertainment unit will release "Fahrenheit 9/11" on DVD and videotape.

Among DVD extras will be a featurette examining the release of "Fahrenheit 9/11," which lost its theatrical distributor last spring after Disney refused to let subsidiary Miramax handle the film because of its political content. Miramax bosses Harvey and Bob Weinstein bought back the film and lined up distribution through Lions Gate and IFC Films.

Also featured on the DVD will be:

_ Deleted footage that includes a scene outside Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, where seven U.S. soldiers have been charged with abusing Iraqi prisoners.

_ Coverage of Lila Lipscomb -- the mother of a U.S. soldier killed in Iraq, who was featured prominently in "Fahrenheit 9/11" -- at the film's premiere in Washington.

_ An examination of the acts and experiences of Arab-American comedians after the Sept. 11 attacks.
By DONNA ABU-NASR

Aug. 14, 2004 | BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) -- Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" is provoking strong Arab reaction. Kuwait banned it, Jordan tried to cut it, Syria has not decided, and Saudi commentators are denouncing it.

Many Arab moviegoers say with a twinge of envy that they wish the region, where free speech is for the most part restricted, had its own Moore. Some say it reinforces their bad image of the United States and shows Americans what their own media does not.

A few believe Moore is unfair to President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"When he condemned the war in Iraq ... he pictured it this way: Baghdad was happy and safe until cowboys Bush and Blair came," Saudi columnist Reem al-Saleh wrote in Kuwait's Al-Siyassah daily.

"He ignored 30 years of muscle-flexing invasions, villages massacred by chemical weapons ... millions of bodies, and mass graves. He has no right to hide the full truth."

Saddam invaded Kuwait in 1990 and was driven out by the U.S.-led 1991 Gulf War. Many Kuwaitis are grateful to the United States and enduringly suspicious of Saddam.

Gianluca Chacra, whose Dubai-based company released the film in the Middle East, said attendance is at blockbuster proportions.

"We were quite scared that due to the Saudi content it might not pass," Chacra said.

In the United Arab Emirates, the information minister, in an unusual step, asked to see it first, then approved it. In Jordan, the censors insisted the Saudi content be cut, Chacra said. They later took the film to "higher authorities," who OK'd it in full, he added.

Kuwait banned the film on the spot, Chacra said. He did not bother showing it to the censors in Saudi Arabia, where there are no movie theaters, only videos.

The movie is playing in the remaining four Gulf Cooperation Council countries. In Syria, Yousef Dakalbab, head of distribution at the government-run Public Cinema Organization, said the film "may be shown or may be banned."

"Fahrenheit 9/11" is playing in Lebanon and Israel and will open in Egypt later this month.

Emerging from a Beirut theater, 22-year-old student Shafiq Nassif said the film showed dead and mutilated Iraqis that Americans do not see much of on their TV screens.

"It's good that Americans can get to see this," he said.

For Radwan Rizk, a 47-year-old Lebanese gym owner, the message was double-edged: Moore's presentation shook his idea of American democracy, yet reinforced it, too.

"I hope that we can come to a point where we can criticize our own governments the way he did -- freely," Rizk said.

Dalal el-Bizri, a Lebanese sociologist based in Cairo, Egypt, warned that the movie "should not be allowed to reinforce the hatred that people feel for America."

"If you have a problem with the United States, hatred will not solve it," she said.

In Cairo, 28-year-old Noha Sayed Al-Ahl, who runs an arts and culture advocacy group, did not find the film tendentious.

Moore "used real footage and facts to support his point of view and used as much proof as possible to back up his claims. If he hadn't, somebody would have taken him to court," she said. "He really cares about America and the foreign policies of America and is brave enough to speak his mind and interpret events in an alternative way."

In a Beirut gym, two women in their 40s discussed the movie as they worked out.

"I loved the movie because it showed that Bush was a partner in terrorism through his dealings with the Saudis and (Osama) bin Laden's family," said Sana Rafeh, a preschool teacher.

Housewife Rabab Itani said Moore's take on terrorism was too narrow.

"There are Arabs and Muslims dying from America's policies every day and not only because of the Bush-Saudi connection," she said. Many said the funniest parts were those depicting Bush, but Jordanian Tareq Khalil said he still believes "America is the most powerful country in the world and Bush is the strongest man."

Sulaiman al-Hattlan, a U.S.-educated Saudi columnist for the Al-Watan newspaper, said Moore lacked objectivity, and made too much of the U.S. Saudi relationship.

"The movie is using the Saudis as scapegoats for domestic, political issues in the U.S.," he said.

Still, al-Hattlan enjoyed "Fahrenheit 9/11."

"In every Arab country we need one Michael Moore or more," he said.

---

Associated Press writers Paul Garwood and Sarah el Deeb in Cairo, Shafika Mattar in Jordan, Tarek al-Issawi in the United Arab Emirates and Albert Aji in Damascus contributed to this report.

He called Michael Moore "not just a thief, but an impolite thief", distanced himself and his book as much as possible from the film, and said he hoped the film "sinks and is forgotten". He said that he had called MM's film company 6 months or so before the release when he found out about it, was told MM would call him back, and he never did. I personally think the title is great, and a fitting tribute to a chilling classic sci-fi dystopia story. Anyway, interesting interview.

This film only scratch's the surface of what REALLY goes on with international politics and worldwide power struggles. But lets all thank our lucky stars that a wound has been opened and the blood now flows. Many people I know, customers I serve and those from "the choir"...have been shocked into awareness and can't hide from the inevitable truth. The power elite answer to profit...will do ANYTHING for it...and must keep that information from the people at whatever the cost...PERIOD.

Spread the word about this film. Make sure you convince people on the fence, or those who wouldn't normally see it, to attend. Go and see it twice...be counted!!!

Help bring about awareness. Get people to understand that American life has been distracted by our great pursuit for a piece of the richman's pie. There is alot more to freedom then consumption.

Deep down we are compassionate people...some people just need to be reminded. This film can...and will do that.
